Padmasri Machani Somappa, the founder of MG Brothers Group of Companies, was a renowned industrialist and social worker. Apart from his business ventures, he dedicated his life to uplifting the weaving community of Yemmiganur in Kurnool District, where he was born in 1904. In 1938, he founded the Yemmiganur Weavers Co-operative Society, which became a model for many handloom co-operative societies across India. He went on to establish several other co-operative institutions and was honored with the Padma Shri award in 1954 for his outstanding contribution to society.

He started the automobile business in 1945 under the trade name MG Brothers, with its principal place of business at Yemmiganur, Kurnool District, Andhra Pradesh. In 1956, Tata Motors Ltd (then Telco) appointed MG Brothers as dealers for their HCV products in the districts of Kurnool, Anantapur, Kadapa, Nellore, and Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, as well as Bellary and Raichur districts in Karnataka.
